The 45-year-old’s hand was caught between the Maruti Omni he was driving and a tempo that rammed into it on the Sion flyover; it flew off after the incident and was found under the back seat of the car
A man’s hand was severed, when a tempo coming from the opposite direction rammed into the Omni he was driving yesterday. The accident occurred on Sion flyover, when the 45-year-old man’s right hand was outside the window and was caught between the Omni and the tempo.

The hand flew off after it was severed, and the police and the driver himself searched for it later on the flyover, until it was found after three hours unde, the back seat of the car. According to the victim, Sanjay Dhundhrav, who is a driver by profession, he had borrowed his friend’s car to show a relative around south Mumbai. He was on his way back to his Dombivli residence, when the incident took place.
The incident
Speaking to mid-day Dhundhrav said, “A relative from my native place had come down to visit the city, so I took him to Haji Ali and while we were returning, a tempo rammed into my car on Sion flyover. After the incident, the accused escaped from the spot without even asking about my well-being.”
Dhundhrav said that after the accident, he and his relative looked for his right hand, but since they couldn’t figure out where it was, they caught a rickshaw and went to Rajawadi hospital. “After we went to the hospital, the doctor asked us to get my hand, fearing birds and stray animals would eat it.
We then rushed back to the spot. Until then, even the cops had been informed and they had come. So we, along with the cops, started looking for my hand again, and we searched the whole of the Sion flyover, but we couldn’t locate my severed hand,” said Dhundrav.
Three hours into the search operation, the cops decided to check in the car that he had been driving and eventually located his hand under the back seat. “I don't know how it went under the car’s back seat, because we thought it would have been thrown somewhere on the road,” added the victim.
The driver further said that he was the sole bread-winner in the family. He stays with his wife and three daughters, and after losing his hand, it will become tougher for him to provide for his family.
Police speak
An officer from Sion police station said, “A hit-and-run case has been registered and we are trying to obtain CCTV footage of the spot, so we can trace the accused.” The cops have registered a case under Sections 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code along with Section 134 (a) (b) under Motor Vehicle Act.
