It is that time of the year again when being placed in a college of their choice will take precedence over all other national and international issues.
With the Higher Secondary (HSC) board results scheduled to be out on Monday, students are a worried lot. Not only are HSC students anxious about their individual scores, but they also want to make sure they score better than their counterparts from other boards such as ISC and CBSE Class XII.

Principals of some of the top colleges have pointed at the trend where the seats in the first merit lists for most courses are increasingly going to non-state-board students. This trend highlights the falling number of HSC students scoring above 90 per cent compared to ISC and CBSE class XII students in the state.
“Over the past three-four years, we have noticed that most seats on the first merit list go to non-state board students. With more and more ISC and CBSE students scoring above 90 per cent, HSC students are at a disadvantage,” said Suhas Pednekar, principal of Ramnarain Ruia College in Matunga. He added that this is a shift from the earlier trend where non-state board students used to find it difficult to get through some of the top colleges in the city due to their marks.
“It isn’t a set pattern but we have noticed that more and more non-state board students get through in the first merit list in our college. We have also noticed that the percentage of outstation students is suddenly increasing,” said Indu Shahani, principal of HR College at Churchgate.
Such trends however, have not dampened the spirits or the hopes of students. “I will apply to HR, NM and Podar College once my results are out, because these are the three best colleges for commerce. I really hope my marks will be good enough to get me a seat in one of these three colleges,” said Kushal Sodhi, an HSC student.
Many like Kushal who want to pursue a course in Chartered Accountancy (CA) along with a BCom, prefer these colleges.
