Around 61 shanties in western Mumbai suburb of Bandra was demolished by the civic authorities on Wednesday.

The  Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) H/East ward office initiated the action against the slumdwelllers residing in the Gandhi Nagar area since the shanties are located near Tansa pipeline that supplies water to the city and hence pose a security threat to the pipeline.

The demolition was supposed to happen in December but was stalled after opposition from locals.

The ward officials this time took more police personnel for protection.
