Rajendra Chauhan and his wife Prabodhini found their 15 minutes of fame yesterday.

"We honestly did not know bikes were not allowed. I drove right past the toll naka, but stopped when the police blew the whistle," said Chauhan, who lives in Mahim.

"Luckily, I had to take a long detour to turn back so we saw at least half the bridge," he grinned.

The couple had been up since 6 am to cross the bridge, which opened to the public an hour later.

Among the hundreds of vehicles that had lined up at the toll naka were autorickshaws who tried to sneak past, but were driven away by the cops.

Said Sayyed Ikhtidar Hussain, who was taking passenger Bhiren Mehta to Ghatkopar via the bridge, "I've been driving my taxi for 15 years and have been waiting for this day.

The ride is very smooth and I don't think commuters will mind paying the Rs 50 toll for this journey." His was one of the first taxis to use the bridge in the morning.
