The state excise department is getting tough on bootleggers in the city, intensifying their crackdown on those smuggling and selling liquor. About 6 places were raided on Saturday, on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti, which is observed as a 'dry day'.

More than three cases were reported from Wadala, and the rest were in South Mumbai. "Liquor worth lakhs of rupees was seized on Saturday. We are yet to get the final figure on the number of bottles seized," said a senior excise official, on condition of anonymity.

"With de-addiction week starting yesterday, we have decided to act tough against these bootleggers," he added.

The official also revealed that the department has deployed a team of special officers, who have been asked to nab the bootleggers in the city. "The drive will continue for the entire week," said the official.

"Recently, after meeting the state excise minister, we were asked to get tough against bootleggers, who are a growing menace in our state," he said.

The problem of liquor coming from the neighboring state of Goa, where liquor prices are low, compared to Maharashtra has also given rise to bootlegging. Most of the liquor seized was transported from Goa, according to the official.
