The Khar Residents Association will set up CCTV cameras along Khar-Bandra to keep the area safe

An initiative taken by KRA (Khar Residents Association), proposes to sponsor a series of CCTV cameras at some of the most congested and sensitive areas in their locality.

In an initial survey carried out by the association members along with the local police and the BMC, four areas like the open space in front of Khar railway station, Carter Road, KFC junction on main Linking Road and the Khar Gymkhana area have been demarked for electronic surveillance.

According to Anandani Thakur, managing trustee of KRA, the association is funding the entire project, from aid collected through private sponsors and is all set to kickstart a pilot project, outside the Khar railway station, which should be completed within a month.

Thakur added that the pilot project outside the Khar railway station was specifically demarked by the citizen group and the police as it was used by thousands of casual labourers looking for daily wage jobs, who gathered everyday between 7 am to 10 am in the morning and had six entry and exit points, which were difficult to monitor physically.

Anil Joseph, another office bearer of the association stated that talks were underway with the police to set up a separate control room with designated staff. A single monitor can accommodate up to four visuals, which will be linked directly to the cameras by optic cables. They also have a data storage facility, which can be utilised for future references.

A police official from Khar police station, who did not wish to be named, informed that though the proposal was the need of the hour, implementing the same would require further detailing.
