Local politicos are rooting for one of their own to head the State

Even before the results of the Assembly elections are out, Congressmen in the State are squabbling over who the next chief minister could be. A whisper campaign is on in the Mumbai Congress, demanding that the next chief minister be from Mumbai.

The rumour began with the name of Union Minister of State for Information Technology Gurudas Kamat suddenly cropping up in the list of probable candidates for the post of CM in certain vernacular newspapers and an English daily.

First, certain North Indian Mumbai Congress activists were reportedly demanding that the CM be chosen from among them. Now, the demand has been finetuned to one from the city because a large number of MLAs were elected from Mumbai and surrounding areas. However, most Congressmen say that only a few leaders are involved in this demand.

Congress spokesperson Anant Gadgil said, "The CM will be elected by the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) and the Congress president. Besides, most of the MLAs elected from Mumbai have enjoyed two terms and know the problems here." Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) president Kripashankar Singh said, "There can't be such a campaign making these demands. The chief minister is decided at the CLP meeting and by the high command."
