Coming Soon? Mumbai University courses in UAE

If everything goes as planned, Mumbai University (MU) may soon be offering its courses in the UAE. Vice Chancellor of MU revealed the plan on Monday while declaring the annual budget of the University. While there are no such regulations supporting opening of such off shore campuses, the university has made a budgetary allocation hoping for the best. The annual budget of the varsity, which has increased to a great extent this year, shows shades of central government’s budget with many ambitious projects such Make In India, digitisation, smart villages, etc.

While there is already an example of failure of such an attempt by Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) four years ago, MU’s ambitious plan, without any concrete discussion or support from the government, is confusing. However, the VC is confident to get the nod for the project and has made budgetary allocation of Rs.20 lakh in advance.

MU VC, Dr. Sanjay Deshmukh said, “We already have a request in writing from the UAE to open our centre there. Most of the expenditure will be taken care of from there while we will be providing our expertise. The budgetary allocation is done in advance as we expect it to be the new trend soon. In that case, if we get the green signal this year, we should not be lagging behind just because we did not have the budgetary allocation for it. Hence, we have made provision.”

Other new plans by MU include smart villages. While country is creating smart cities, MU will involve NSS units of colleges and varsity in taking responsibility of five villages from five districts to make them smart.
