Post-mortem shows that Ramchandran died due to "traumatic amputation of left arm"; cops launch probe into railway's rescue operation

Postmortem findings at Thane Civil hospital concluded that motorman R Ramchandran's death was due to "shock and haemorrhage due to polytrauma and traumatic amputation of lower part of the left arm."

Eyewitnesses present at the scene of the accident confirmed to Sunday MiD DAY that the motorman was alive until he was pulled out of the cabin.

Madhukar Patil, a political party worker who was amongst those who rushed to the spot immediately after the accident, said, "I could see the motor man trapped inside his cabin. He was alive and was in shock. He nodded his head when I asked him whether he wanted water. He was conscious till 2.30 pm and then the gas cutters arrived. Minutes before the rescue team could pull him out, I could hear a loud cry and suddenly there was complete silence. I was surprised to see the rescue team pull out the motorman who was motionless."

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kalyan Division) P Y Sardar confirmed to Sunday MiD DAY that Ramchandran's hand had to be amputated as rescue operators could not pull him out of the debris.

According to Sardar, the rescue team and railway doctors on the spot took this decision. Asked if the doctors
administered any anaesthesia before amputing the hand, the ACP said, "That will be a part of our investigation."

However, the irony is that the autopsy doctors at Thane Civil hospital have not preserved any photographs or video CDs of the post mortem, which could have helped decipher the exact nature of the injury that led to the amputation.

According to hospital doctors, Ramchandran had a fractured femur (thigh) bone, tibia (lower leg) and his left scalp had a haematoma.

Srinivas Mudgerikar, Chief Public Relation Officer (Central Railways) said, "Commissioner (Railway Safety) Sudhir Kumar will be conducting a statutory inquiry into the accident from October 26 and will cover all factors, including the rescue operation of the motorman and the commuters. The report will be then submitted to the Railway Ministry."

Meanwhile, the National Railway Mazdoor Union Mumbai Divisional Secretary N Haridasan said, "We want an in-depth inquiry into the entire episode of rescuing the motorman. The whole suburban system is over-stressed, there is a shortage of motormen and technical staff for maintenance work and the disaster management of railways is in a pitiful state. We need Railways to take immediate steps or we will force them to do the needful."
