Transport commissioner makes his personal e-mail address public so that people can approach him with their problems

Ritwik Dahake, a senior research fellow at the Haffkine Institute used to believe trying to get a problem solved

by the RTO would create new problems. But now, after some prompt e-mail responses, he knows that the RTO isn't such a mess.

www.mahatranscom.in website didn't work. So, he sent an e-mail to transport commissioner Deepak Kapoor after which all of Dahake's queries were solved. "How is the public supposed to figure out the procedures without y going to the RTO office," asks Dahake.

Kapoor had made public his e-mail address after he heard that people were unhappy with his department. "It's a confidence building exercise. If people send complaints by post, it may delay things. An e-mail will definitely be useful," said Kapoor.

Since Kapoor's e-mail address was made public, RTO gets more than five e-mails every day.u00a0

"Not only Mumbaikars, but even people from countries like France, Sri Lanka and the US have visited our site. I am happy that people are trusting me with their problems," added Kapoor.

Kapoor reviews the mails every Friday, but the deputy of the RTO, Jitendra Patil, scans them daily.

Most of the complaints concern taxis, vehicle transfers and the inferior quality of smart cards.
