After the University of Mumbai failed to declare the results of over 400 examinations, the Governor of Maharashtra, in his capacity as Chancellor of all universities in the state, has stepped in for damage control. Noting how the varsity has delayed almost all results beyond the statutory limit of 45 days, Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao has now asked the Vice Chancellor to declare all results by July end. Moreover, a daily report will have to be submitted to the Governor's office by Vice Chancellor Dr Sanjay Deshmukh.
Following several media reports and students unions' complaints regarding the inordinate delay in the Mumbai University results, Rao, on Tuesday met Dr Deshmukh and the secretary of the higher education department of the state, Sitaram Kunte. The governor asked the VC to submit to him a detailed report explaining the strategy and roadmap for declaration of results on time. The Vice-Chancellor was also directed to submit a daily progress report to the Government and to the Chancellor's Secretariat. Moreover, the state government has been asked to depute a representative to closely monitor the progress.

The Bombay University and College Teachers' Union (BUCTU) has also given a petition of their complaint against the varsity administration to the Governor on Tuesday.
Out of 477 examinations conducted by the Mumbai University, results of only 51 examinations have been declared so far. According to provisions of Section 89 of the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, the University is required to declare results preferably in 30 days and in no case beyond 45 days.
Dr M A Khan, registrar of the varsity, said, "Today's review meeting with the Chancellor has boosted the morale of university authorities, and the administration has geared up to declare results as early as possible."
