Karjat railway station hawker helps police arrest seven of the nine suspects who threw man from a train in motion, killing him

Yesterday, seven of the nine men, who murdered Dilip Salat (21) by brutally beating him and then throwing him out of the running train, were arrested by the Karjat GRP.

While two of the accused are still at large, the arrests would never have been possible without Santosh Pawar (name changed), a hawker at Karjat railway station.

The night that was

In the evening of September 17, Salat and his wife Mala, brother and sister-in-law along with their child boarded the unreserved bogey of the Verawal Express from Pune for Baroda.

"The three accused Lakhan Jadhav, Ganesh Gaikwad and Irfan Sheikh were in the same bogey," said Senior PI Karjat GRP, S S Dhumal.

At Lonavala station, Salat got off and called the RPF to sort out the matter. The cops sent the three accused to the last bogey of the train, which was the second from the engine.

"Just before the train reached Karjat, the three accused called six friends to the station. The men got off and two boarded Salat's bogey.

One of the three accused, Ganesh Gaikwad, was bleeding from the head after the altercation with Salat," added Dhumal. That's when Pawar overheard snatches of a conversation that helped nab the accused.

"A man got off the train and bought a bottle of water from the canteen. He was bleeding from the head. There were six other men with him and he told them that Irfan was inside the compartment.

He said he wouldn't join them as he had to go to Ambernath to get his injury treated," said a police officer, who was approached by Pawar.

Added Dhumal, "We had been searching for the men day and night with just two clues a name Irfan and a station Ambernath."

The Karjat police asked the Ambernath police to get details about Irfan and other accused. Irfan and his friend, already had cases registered against them and were known to the Ambernath police.

The Karjat police then went to Irfan's home in Ambernath. "He was absconding ever since the incident, as were the other accused, which confirmed our suspicions.

We arrested them yesterday from different locations," said Dhumal.

The six men who boarded the train at Karjat have been identified as Rahul Ninganpalli, Sachin Devakar, Irfan alias Ali khan, Bholenath Jadhav, Sunil Rajan and Israth Sheikh. Lakhan and Ishrath are absconding.

The Dos and Don'ts

Yes, say the GRP.

What the RPF did...
At Salat's behest, they entered the train at Lonavala, and sent the three to the last bogey.
