Mumbai may have had its share of terrorist attacks giving nightmares to the policemen but it also has another threat looming over its security forces with over 100 of its personnel dying of heart attack last year alone.

It came to light that of the 376 policemen who have died during the last one year, 114 have succumbed to heart attacks, a reply to an RTI application filed by Mumbai resident Chetan Kothari revealed.

Stress, poor attention to health, irregular health check-ups, besides obesity, smoking habits, blood pressure and other such issues are triggering heart problems among the constabulary of the western metropolis.

"The main cause of heart attack is coronary heart disease. The reason being obesity, stress, smoking habits, high BP, diabetes and lack of exercise, thus indicating that a person is not physically fit," Dr Ashok Seth, a cardiologist with Fortis Healthcare said.

"The basic requirement among policemen is physical fitness. Here in Mumbai, one policeman dies every 48 hours due to some disease or the other," Kothari said.

Other diseases that led to death among the Mumbai policemen includes tuberculosis, kidney failure, liver failure, diabetes, asthma, pneumonia, brain hemorrhage, jaundice, HIV, cancer, multi-organ failure and pneumonia.

According to the RTI reply, deaths have also occurred due to several unnatural causes like suicide, accidents, poisoning, and terrorist attacks. Kothari said, "Most deaths due to heart attack have been reported among officers and constables in the Mumbai Police Commissioners office in the past one year."

A total of 4,996 policemen in all levels are working across 89 police stations in Mumbai.
