A 27-year-old inmate of Thane Central Jail committed suicide by hanging himself in his barrack on Monday night. Sources said the deceased has been identified as Siraj Aalam Ramjan Aali Shaikh. “He was found missing during the counting at 6 pm, and at 8 pm, his body was found,” said an officer.
Shaikh was arrested in 2015 for the kidnapping and rape of a girl; the case was registered in Kandivli’s Samta Nagar police station. “He was initially in Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai. A few days ago, he was shifted to Thane Central Jail,” said another Thane prison official.
Authorities are now trying to find out why he took the extreme step.
