Man spots his stolen bike near advocate's house with changed number plates; cops raid the lawyer's house to find counterfeit documents and blank driving licences

The Malad police have arrested a 38-year-old advocate Shrikant Mishra from his residence in Orlem, Malad yesterday for allegedly making fake documents of stolen vehicles and then selling them in different cities across the country.

Cops recovered the bike that was stolen from Malad (W)

According to the Malad police, complainant Vivek Sarvadhi, a resident of Malad (West), had filed an FIR after his motorcycle went missing from the area last week.

Yesterday, as Sarvadhi was passing by Orlem Church in Malad he saw his motorcycle parked on the road.

"Sarvadhi recognised his bike as the sticker he had put on the petrol tank was still intact. But, the number plate was registered to Uttar Pradesh," said PSI Manohar Herpude, Malad police station.

Sarvadhi rushed to the police station and informed the cops. Immediately, a police team was dispatched to the spot. On asking the locals, the cops were informed that the bike belonged to a resident from the area.

"We found Mishra at the house, on searching the premises found insurance papers and other documents relating to five cars and three motorcycles. We suspect that the documents are fake. We also found a few blank driving licences. We also believe that Mishra is in collaboration with a gang involved in vehicle thefts in the city," said Herpude.

Mishra's visiting card mentions that he is a practising lawyer in the High Court and Supreme Court. "We are now investigating if Mishra, who is an advocate, is involved in making fake documents of stolen vehicles and selling them in other cities," added Herpude.

Police are also in the midst of investigating if Mishra himself stole the vehicles or if he had any accomplices to commit the crimes. Mishra was produced in the holiday court yesterday and was remanded to police custody till December 1.
