Cops believe robbery is the motive in brutal killing of woman and her daughter-in-law found dead at home

A woman and her daughter-in-law were brutally murdered by unidentified robbers at their apartment in the Liberty Gardens area in Malad (W) yesterday.

The murderers stole their gold mangalsutras and bangles collectively weighing between eight and 10 tolas and Rs 10,000 in cash, which summed up to Rs 1.2 lakh. According to the police, the deceased identified as Rekha Sanghavi (84) and Bhavna Sanghaviu00a0 (54) were murdered between 9 am and 11 am.

Brutal death


Rekha was smothered to death with a pillow, while Bhavna was bludgeoned with a grinding stone. Bhavna's husband, Ramesh, an insurance agent was at work when the incident took place in the third floor flat in Kirti Kunj building.





"Bhavna's naked body was found in the bathroom. She must have been taking a bath. Bhavna was hit by a pestle. Rekha's body was found in the living room and she was frothing at the mouth. The two had even finished making lunch," said Inspector Sardar Patil from Malad police station. The murder weapons u2014 the pestle and a pillow were found at the site.

The incident came to light when Rekha's maid came to work at 5.30 pm. "The Sanghavis, like other people in the building, don't lock their front door. They only latch the safety door, but it can be easily opened from outside. When the maid entered, she saw the dead bodies and alerted the neighbours," said Patil.

The police added that the flat had been ransacked and gold ornaments were missing. "The motive behind the murder is robbery. Even the gold earrings Rekha was wearing were missing," said the police officer.

"The building has many commercial shops. The apartment next to the victims' is a shop and people frequent it.

Ten days ago, Rekha's family had painted their house. We are checking all the leads in the case," added Patil.
