Marathi writer Ram Shewalkar dies of cardiac arrest

Noted Marathi writer, orator and literary figure of Maharashtra, Professor Ram Balkrishna Shewalkar died of a massive cardiac arrest here this morning at his residence.

Shewalkar (76) was a known figure in the entire state and was recipient of many honours and awards.

Born on March 2, 1931 at Achalpur in Amravati district, Shewalkar was a post graduate in both Marathi and Sanskrit. Started as a teacher in a school, Shewalkar later rose to become a Principal in a local college in Wani in Yavatmal district. He remained principal for more than 25 years.


He was president of Vidarbha Sahitya Sangh for nine years. He was elected as president of 67th All India Marathi Sahitya Sammelan, twice in its history.



He delivered a key note address in 8th convention of Bruhan Maharashtra Marathi Mahamandal in Boston (USA) in 1979. He had authored more than 50e books to his credit.

A member of Film Censor Board for 11 years, Shewalkar was awarded the prestigious Dinanath Mangehkar Kusumagraj award, Jeenvrati Puraskar of Vidarbha Sahitya Sangh, Nag Bushan award and awarded D Lit by the Nagpur University.

Shewalkar was felicitated by melody singer Lata Mangeshkar in his 75th birth day celebration. He is survived by wife Vijaya and son Ashutosh.
