The Bhoiwada court yesterday remanded four youths in police custody till May 25 after they were found guilty of assaulting three police sub-inspectors (PSIs) from Ghatkopar police station on Saturday night.

The culprits were identified as Sumit Singh (21), Bipin Singh (24), Vikas Upadhyay (27) and Siddharth Sampat (30). Cops are now on the lookout for three of their friends, who were party to the crime.

The attack
On Saturday, around 9:30 pm, sub inspectors Mahadeo Shid and Bhushan Pawat were patrolling in plain clothes near Haveli Bridge, Ghatkopar, during which they spotted Sumit speeding into a no-entry zone on his two-wheeler.

The officers intercepted him after a short chase, during which another sub-inspector Janrao joined them. After stopping Sumit, PSI Shid showed him his identity card as the officers were in plain clothes. But instead of apologising for violating a traffic norm, Sumit started arguing with the trio.

While the cops were busy discussing among themselves the action they could to initiate against Sumit, he called a few of his friends and asked them to come to the spot. Within minutes of making the calls, six of Sumit’s friends including Bipin, Vikas and Siddharth reached the spot.

They too started arguing with the cops. Without prior warning, all seven of them attacked the three PSIs. They repeatedly kicked and hit the cops with their belts. An official from the Ghatkopar police station claimed that it was a beat marshal who saw the brawl and requested for police back up.

A team of Ghatkopar police reached the spot and brought the situation under control. While they managed to arrest Sumit, Bipin, Vikas and Siddharth, the other three accused managed to evade arrest and are on the run since. Senior Inspector Vasant Patil from Ghatkopar police station said, “The four accused were arrested on the spot.

One of the accused, Bipin, is part of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). All the three PSIs were from Ghatkopar police station and were on patrolling duty when the accused assaulted them. Further investigation is on.”

He said the arrested quartet was booked under Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Indian Penal Code.
