The deceased, Amit Ravi Rathod, a resident of Keshavpada in Mulund, did not leave any suicide note on why he took the extreme step. Police are also trying to find out the reason behind the incident. Preliminary probe has indicated no foul play, as doctors also opined that it was a case of hanging.

According to the police, Rathod was arrested on Friday for allegedly stealing valuables worth nearly Rs 7 lakh from a businessman’s house. The said businessman was the employer of Rathod’s wife Vidya. Cops said that apart from Rathod there were three more accused inside the lockup, including a co-accused in the theft case. He was arrested on Friday and remanded in police custody till May 3.

“At around 2.30am, Rathod went to the washroom and kept the tap on. He inverted the bucket and then hanged himself with his shirt by tying it to the grills of the ventilator window. After 15 minutes, when a lockup guard noticed that Rathod had not come out, he went in to check and found him hanging. Rathod was rushed to the hospital and was declared dead,” a police officer said.

No external injuries
Rathod’s post-mortem was conducted at JJ hospital. JJ dean Dr. TP Lahane said there were no external injuries on Rathod’s body and hanging caused his death. Cops said that when they checked the footage of the CCTV camera, installed in the police station, Rathod was seen going to the washroom alone. Sources say that Rathod had been convicted in a theft case in the past.

“There were three inmates in the lockup and one independent witness who had come to police station for lodging his Non-Cognisable complaint, who saw Rathod going to the toilet. We are investigating why he committed suicide and have registered an accidental death report,” said Rajaram Vhanmane, senior inspector of Mulund police station.

Married recently
A crime branch officer said Rathod married 35-year-old Vidya, who is also his aunt, four months ago. Several relatives had criticised him for the same. She is pregnant now. “Family problems could be a possible reason that triggered him to take the extreme step,” the officer said.
