Mumbai: Man killed over old rivalry

A 25-year-old man was allegedly murdered by 8 people on Sunday on the pretext of compromising old grudges held between them.

They allegedly asked the friend of the victim to get him out of the house in hopes of meeting him.


According to the police officials there are two local mandals.


The victim identified as Sanjay Suresh Pagare belonged to Jai Maharshtra Mitra Mandal while the attackers belonged to Durga Mata Mitra Mandal.


The accused and the victim are the resident of Tembipada in Bhandup.

According to the police officials the eight accused has been identified as Bhupendra Arekar, Devendra Arekar, Rahul Gholap, Anirudh Kamble, Avinash Bane, Amar Lotte, Prakash Surve and Sambhaji Kashid.

The family of the victim witnessed the killing, blames the chief of the rival mandal, Sambha Kashid who already has several cases registered against him.

Speaking to MiD-Day, the brother of the victim, Suraj Pagare said, "After having his dinner he was about to sleep but one of our friend called him and there was nothing unusual about it and they went near the pipeline. There he was attacked with sword and chopper."

He added, "Our rivalry vanished after the death of our eldest brother Satish Pagare, two years ago. Since his death there were no heated arguments but yesterday they directly attacked."

However senior police inspector S. Nadgavda from Bhandup Police station said, "The two groups have been fighting since Holi and the reason is yet to be identified.

"The friend who had called Pagare out of the house wasn’t aware of the worst as he was told to call the victim in order to solve the old rivalry held between the two."

The accused has been identified as 302 (Punishment for murder), 143 (Punishment), 144 (Joining unlawful assembly armed with deadlyweapon), 147 (Punishment for rioting), 148 (Rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) and 120B (Punishment of criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
