Since Saturday, two monkeys have terrorised the residents of the Mahakali area in Andheri (East), stealing their potatoes and tomatoes, entering their houses and scattering their possessions
Anxiety is running high in the Mahakali area in Andheri (East), where the local residents are being held to ransom by a couple of thieving monkeys.

Since the past three days, nervous locals have spotted two monkeys roaming about in the locality, entering residents’ houses and even stealing potatoes and tomatoes from vegetable vendors. The monkey duo was first spotted on Saturday morning, swinging from roof to roof in a chawl about 200 metres from the Mahakali caves.
Locals believe that the monkeys may have found their way there from Sanjay Gandhi National Park through Aarey Milk Colony. The monkeys were seen swiping tomatoes and potatoes from vegetable handcarts in the area. On Sunday, the monkeys had even entered one of the flats in the area and scattered household items everywhere.
“On Sunday, the monkeys entered one of the flats in Mahakali Trans Apartment. It is good that no one was injured, but fearing them, residents have now started shutting their doors and windows before dark,” said Rahul Misra, one of the locals. Mahakali residents claim they tried to contact the forest department to have the monkeys taken away, but were not able to get through to the officials.
A resident of the nearby chawl said, “We are not against monkeys. We are only scared that they should not cause any problems to small children in the area. The forest department should take the monkeys away and release them in the forest, where they will find ample amount of food.”
