A 26-year-old police constable became the butt of his own joke yesterday when he fell unconscious while demonstrating to his wife how a death row convict is hanged in jail.

A police official said Govind Balaji Devle, a police constable attached to the Ghatkopar police firing range, tried to help his wife Priyanka, who was attempting to tie a nylon rope inside their Bhandup home to dry clothes as it was raining outside. Govind then climbed on a small table and tied one end of the rope to an iron rod in their place. Before tying the other end, he jokingly told his wife that he would show her how a death row convict is hanged. He then tied the rope around his neck and that very moment the table fell thus tightening the noose. Priyanka raised an alarm and got help.

The neighbours then rushed him to a hospital in an unconscious state. “Devle was left unconscious and was immediately shifted to the MT Agrawal Municipal hospital in Mulund at 5.20 pm,” said a local from the area. Govind is now in the ICU.

A police official said, “Govind, a native of Beed, has an 11-month-old daughter. The police will record his statement once he is shifted to the general ward. His neighbours, owner of his house and wife’s statements have been recorded.”
