The Bombay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) is getting ready to hold an event at the Royal Western India Turf Club headquarters, Mahalaxmi Racecourse on January 17, called Woofs and Hoofs carnival. The event aims to raise funds to re-do the horse ward and other areas in the Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals, which is over 140-years-old.

Organisers claim that it is a happy mix of education and entertainment where children will be taught about raising and treating animals in a creative way. There will be shopping with NGO stalls, products for kids and lifestyle shopping too. Food stalls are going to be part of the carnival. Most visitors to the racecourse (walkers and joggers) not just punters, may have seen several dogs on the course and outside around the track too.
Many of these are racecourse dogs, and the horses are used to them. They are all around the stables too, proving that the horse-dog duet is a good thing here. The event though is for all animals. It is good to see that this turf is being used not just for equines but all in the animal kingdom.
The Mall the merrier for the blind
TWO malls, those contemporary calling cards of consumerism, proved there is a heart behind all that commerce. Yesterday, Infiniti Mall, Malad held a flash dance by blind students to mark World Braille Day which is celebrated on January 4 every year, which is the birthday of Braille inventor, Louis Braille.

And on the same day Viviana Mall, Thane became visually impaired friendly. The mall now has audio-tactile labels, Braille menu cards at retail outlets, an audio-tactile floor plan as well as a sensitisation treasure hunt for patrons.
This project was inaugurated by Dr Sam Taraporevala, Director of Xavier’s Resource Centre for the Visually Challenged (XRCVC) and Sunil Shroff, the senior Vice President of the mall. We are liking tooo much, this new Mumbai, okay?
