Mumbai accident: Riding without helmet costs newly-wed man his life

Pritesh Lad and Gayatri Pawar were riding without helmets

A midnight joyride ended in tragedy for two newlyweds from Sion Koliwada, after their bike crashed into a milk van near GTB Nagar station bridge, killing the man and injuring his wife. Pritesh Lad, 25, who was not wearing a helmet, died of serious head injuries, while Gayatri Pawar, 26, is undergoing treatment and is in stable condition.

The couple, residents of Shanti Nagar in Sion Koliwada, had gone to grab a bite near Sion hospital. On their way back home around 2 am, when they reached the bridge, the van suddenly appeared before them, leading to the two-wheeler ramming into it.

A few passers-by brought them to Sion hospital, where Lad was declared dead on arrival and Pawar was admitted for injuries to her arms and legs.

A neighbour, who brought the two to the hospital, said, "The van suddenly came in front of Lad's bike. After the accident, the driver of the van didn't stop and drove on for about a kilometre."

"After the accident, the police wasted time questioning the van driver instead of rushing the two to hospital. Pritesh's life could have been saved had he been taken to hospital on time," he alleged.

Another neighbour, who was also present at the spot, said, "The police are helping the van driver and trying to project as if it was Pritesh's fault. It was clearly the van driver's mistake."

When mid-day contacted the on-duty officer at Sion police station, he said, "We are investigating the matter and have detained the driver."

A doctor at Sion hospital said, "Lad was brought in with heavy bleeding and serious head injuries; he must have died en route to the hospital. Pawar's treatment is on, she is in stable condition."

Lad was working in a garment store and Pawar was a homemaker. The couple lived with Lad's mother.
