Two college students have been arrested for allegedly raping a teenaged minor girl, while a third collegian has been arrested for filming the minor while she was being raped. The Dadar police arrested the three men after the girl’s family approached them earlier this month.

The accused have been identified as Kunal Vaghela (20), Karan alias Kunal Rumde (21), and Sebastian Alphonso (20), all Worli residents and college students. According to the minor’s statement to the police, in August 2014, she had gone to a college in Mahalaxmi to meet her childhood friend.

Two days later, she got a call from an unknown number, and the person on the other end identified himself as Kunal. He said he wanted to be friends with the 17-year-old, and the duo started talking on the phone regularly.

In September 2014, Kunal asked the survivor to accompany him and his friend to Nallasopara. The minor agreed and the trio went to the beach and checked into a hotel. Here, Kunal confessed to the girl that he loved her, allegedly forced himself on her and raped her.

When the girl returned home, her mother asked her where she had been, and on hearing that she had gone to Nallasopara with a friend, confiscated her cellphone. In October 2014, the survivor got back her phone and got in touch with Kunal, who met her and took her to his house.

When Kunal’s mother was not at home, he got intimate with her. The girl noticed someone clicking her pictures and this person was Karan. The girl asked Karan to delete these pictures and left.

Threats
Two months later, in January this year, Karan contacted the teenager and asked her to meet him, telling her he would delete the pictures only if she “did with him, what she had done with Kunal,” the minor’s statement read.

On May 16, Karan then raped the minor in a room in Worli and the girl found herself in another trap when a third friend Sebastian was found recording a video of the duo. Sebastian threatened to upload the video on Facebook if she didn’t have sex with him.

Fed up of the threats and scared of the clips being made public, she narrated her ordeal to her mother and the duo registered the case with the Dadar police on May 17.

Nishikant Patil, senior police inspector, Dadar police station, told mid-day, “Kunal and Karan were arrested on May 22 from their house, and Sebastian was arrested on May 27 after a trap was laid. We have recovered the mobile phones, but the accused have deleted the videos and photos. These will be recovered by the forensic lab in some time.”

Kunal was booked under Sections 376 (rape), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. Karan was booked, apart from the aforementioned sections, under Section 114 (abettor present when offence is committed) of the IPC.

Sebastian was booked under Sections 114 and 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the IPC. All three were also booked under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.

Kunal and Karan were produced in the Sessions Court and remanded in police custody till June 2. Sebastian was produced in the Sessions Court on May 28 (Thursday) and remanded in police custody till June 5.
