A 28-year-old Nagpur resident has been arrested by police for allegedly trying to extort money from doctors and electronics goods store owners in the city.

According to the police, the accused, Anil Kumar, was specifically threatening doctors and electronics store owners, as he had had bad experiences with people from these professions in the past, and this was his way of getting even with them.

Police sub-inspector Prakash Linge from Kalachowkie police station, said, “Kumar is a carpenter and he would find phone numbers from online portals and send them text messages, demanding money at the account number mentioned, and threatening to shoot at their shop if the owners did not comply.”

Linge added, “Kumar was targeting doctors because two years back, when his uncle passed away, he believed that it was due to the doctors’ negligence, who made him move from one hospital to another as he did not have enough money.

He would also threaten owners of electronics goods stores because he had previously made furniture for one such electronics shop and the owner had refused to pay him.” The accused would send text messages from a SIM card he had found on a footpath.

“He recently sent a message to a shop owner in Parel. The owner initially assumed it to be a prank, but when Kumar continued to send threats, he approached Kalachowkie police station on December 16 and lodged a complaint,” Linge said.

Using the Call Data Records, cops traced him to Wadi area in Nagpur, where a team was sent on Tuesday to arrest him. Kumar has been booked under Section 384 (extortion) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 66 (A) (Sending offensive messages through communication service) of the IT Act. He was produced before the Bhoiwada court and has been remanded to police custody till December 29.
