Around 1,000 homes in Pant Nagar, Ghatkopar, were without electricity last night because the substation supplying power in the area caught fire at 8.30 pm. Although there were no casualties, the magnitude of the fire was such that wires five feet away from the substation melted.
A fire officer said, "There was oil leaking from the transformer and a spark may have set ablaze the oil." Power is likely to be restored by today afternoon. A Reliance Infrastructure spokesperson said, "We will investigate the case with the fire department and provide electricity to the residents as soon as possible through generators."
K K Pandey, GM technician from Reliance Infrastructure, said, "We plan to restore power to at least 70 per cent of the area with the help of generators."
Meanwhile, residents of Grilaxmi Building, in the premises of which the substation is located, have complained and requested it to be kept far away. Isaac D Gudkar, secretary of the building, said, "We have opposed this substation since 1973. The building's gas pipeline runs about five feet away from the substation. It is very dangerous."
