BMC to install a permanent pump station in Kalanagar to draw flood water out during rains; work begins in February
The civic authorities may be dragging their feet in repairing vital suburban pipelines, but when the water woes emanate from Kalanagar in Bandra (East), the BMC sits up and takes notice.

Rahul Shewale, chairperson of standing committee, BMC, said, "The residents of Kalanagar approached us during the monsoons. During the July 2005 floods, the whole area had been flooded. To solve the yearly problem, we have decided to install a pumping station that would be connected to the Chamdawadi nullah," he said, adding that the work would begin next month.
According to a senior officer, if the installation starts in February, the pump house would be ready within five months, well before the monsoons hit the city.
Primarily the pump stations were supposed to connect Government Colony and Kalanagar as both are prone to inundation. But for now, the civic body will go ahead with the Kalanagar pump. "In the first phase we would cover only Kalanagar, because Government Colony is undergoing redevelopment," said Shewale.
Earlier, temporary pumps used to be installed during monsoons, but now there will be a permanent one. "If the pump is not permanent, we would turn temporary," joked a corporator, implying that the failure to install the pump would result in loss of office for them.
A resident from the area said, "During the monsoons, the problem is grave. We needed a pump house since long. Now that it is coming, it would be a relief."
