The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Develop-ment Authority (MMRDA) has forwarded a proposal to construct a four-lane 800m flyover, from Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) via the Western Suburbs to Western Express Highway (WEH) in Mahim.
Feasibility studies are currently under way as part of preliminary preparations.u00a0
According to MMRDA officials, preparations are being made since Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB) at BKC will begin operations in two months, thereby increasing traffic congestion on interior roads leading to BDB. "BDB in the next two months will draw 2,000 to 2,500 vehicles everyday.

In addition, vehicular movement by visitors to the American Consulate during peak hours creates traffic snarls at BKC. This, consequently, has a cascading effect on important roads like Kurla-Bandra Link Road", said an unnamed MMRDA official.
Currently, due to the regular traffic congestion at Kalanagar Junction, motoristsu00a0going and coming to Bandra (W), the island city and Western Suburbs, are delayed by half an hour on average. The proposed flyover will enable free traffic flow and is expected to reduce travelling time by 45 minutes.
The flyover will start at the BKC E Block near Max City building and end at WEH in Mahim. The alignment of the proposed bridge is subject to results of ongoing soil testing etc, but will be in close proximity of Mumbai Metro line 2 - Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd (32 km) corridor.

Officials said that the flyover would either pass below the metro line or slightly adjacent to it. The flyover will have four lanes (2 on each side) and would be 15 metres wide and is estimated to cost between Rs 30 to 35 Crores.
According to officials, the project is presently in its conceptual stage and more research is required before initiation. Geo-technical analysis and feasibility study will be conducted shortly, and the exact alignment of the bridge will be decided.
A Detailed Project Report (DPR) and acquisition of various clearances is pending action, after which tendering and execution will be initiated. Preliminary processes will be finalised in 6 months and the estimated time for construction is 16 to 18 months after that.
