PETA appeals for vegan meals on all airlines

Taking a leaf out of Air India's book, People for The Ethical treatment of Animals (PETA) India wrote multiple letters to all the major Indian airline companies, asking them to serve vegan meals to all passengers on-board.

Earlier this week, the government carrier had received a lot of flak for announcing its decision of serving vegetarian meals to domestic economy class passengers. Supporting the idea of providing meat-free food, PETA appealed to all Indian airline companies to serve eco-friendly meals to passengers across all classes. "Balancing an airline's carbon footprint can start with putting meat and dairy products on the no-fly list," said Dr Manilal Valliyate, PETA CEO.

In the letters, PETA has mentioned that meat, egg and dairy products were one of the leading causes of climate change. In addition to producing an estimated 51 per cent of the worldwide greenhouse-gas emissions, animal agriculture also uses a massive amount of water, land and food resources, states the letters.

Health risk
According to PETA, 194 million people in India are undernourished. The consumption of meat, eggs and dairy products has also been conclusively linked to an increased risk of suffering from heart diseases, strokes, diabetes, obesity and cancer.
