The lone terrorist arrested in the November 26 terror attacks in Mumbai, Mohammed Amir Ajmal Qasab had a smile throughout the proceedings of his case during his maiden appearance in the special court at Arthur Road central jail on Wednesday.

Clad in a dark grey T-shirt and black track suit, Qasab, was brought to the court amid tight security at 11.30 am.

Two other accused in the case, Fahim Ansari and Sabauddin Ahmed, were the next to arrive.

Qasab, sporting a beard, listened keenly to the arguments and seemed to understand as he smiled and nodded his head every time lawyers made their submissions.

At one point of time, he was seen talking to Fahim and the Judge warned him that he should not interact with other accused without the permission of the court.

The accused were brought to the court from a separate entrance, which was heavily guarded till the end of court proceedings.

Judge ML Tahilyani asked Qasab, "Do you know your lawyers? Can you find them here?" As Qasab looked around to locate them, the judge pointed at advocates Anjali Waghmare and KP Pawar saying, "They will defend you".

However, in a sudden turn of events, Waghmare was removed as Qasab's lawyer by the court.
