On Saturday morning, Sheru, the stray dog who survived 26/11, breathed his last. The 11-year-old succumbed to cardiac arrest at 7.30 am. The doctors treating him at Bombay Society Prevention Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) said the dog’s immunity had weakened due to age.

“Sheru was in the ICU since the past four days. He was an integral part of the BSPCA family. A Parsi lady, who was his caretaker and sponsor, cremated him at noon,” said Dr Mayur Dangar, manager at BSPCA, Parel.
Sheru was at CST on November 26, 2008, when terrorists sprayed bullets inside the terminus, and survived. He had been ill for a long time in October, but recovered in November this year. When sunday mid-day visited the stray dog on November 26, Lt Dr JC Khanna, Secretary of the animal hospital, explained that Sheru had developed severe rashes all over his body.
On November 26 2008, a bullet from an AK-47 hit Sheru’s left shoulder blade. He was immediately operated and was in the ICU for six months before being shifted to a 20x20 feet enclosure with a 10x10 feet toilet inside the Dog Ward. One of the bullets was removed during surgery, but the doctors decided to let the second bullet in his neck be, since removing it would have damaged the dog’s respiratory tract.
