Sawant had been suspended for his alleged involvement in the fake stamp paper scam masterminded by Abdul Karim Telgi. He was arrested in January 2004 for shielding Telgi, but wasu00a0 discharged in June 2007 for want of evidence. Sawant was a Deputy Commissioner of Police in Mumbai at the time of his arrest.
