A 20-year-old plumber was beaten to death in Bhiwandi on Saturday morning at 2 am.

The deceased, identified as Imtiaz Ansari, was a resident of Vitthal Nagar, and according to police he hung out with his friends late into the night at Faizal Compound, where a powerloom factory stands.

Ansari walked in unannounced looking for a matchbox when he was accosted by the factory employees sleeping on the premises. "In the dark, they mistook him for a thief and beat him to death," said a senior official from Bhoiwada police station.

The next morning Ansari's brother, Sabir Ansari found his body 500 metres away from the factory and informed the police. Bastiram Bhisnoi and Bhajanlal Bisnoi, owners of the factory, have been arrested, while a search is on for four other accused. A case has been registered.
