Thane Builder's suicide: Three corporators secure HC relief against disqualification

The Bombay High Court yesterday granted interim relief to three Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) corporators against disqualification from their posts until June 20.

The trio has been accused of abetting builder Suraj Parmar’s suicide under various sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

While the court had originally scheduled the hearing of pleas filed by NCP corporators Najeeb Mulla and Hanumant Jagdale, Congress corporator Vikrant Chavan submitted his plea alongside, requesting the court to hear it, as he too is part of the same case.

In their pleas, the corporators alleged that it was vendetta politics played by state government led by the BJP-Shiv Sena combine, as not a single corporator from either of the two parties was booked in this case.

Seeking relief for their clients, the lawyers argued that it would be unfair to deny them interim relief considering that the Sudhakar Chavan (an independent and the fourth accused in the case) had already secured it till June 20.

Stating that the matter would be heard by a regular bench on June 20, the high court bench of Justices Bhushan Gavai and BP Collabawalla ordered interim relief for the three corporators until then.
