The New Heroes

A new breed of sports heroes is firing children's imaginations in the city. These are world billiards champion Pankaj Advani, boxer Vijender Singh and footballer S Paul, the goalie for India at the Nehru Cup.

School principals see a growing shift towards sports apart from cricket, though they are unanimous that space crunch, money and time constraints are still holding back youngsters from taking their off beat sporting dreams ahead.

Kavita Sahay, director of Vibgyor High School in Goregaon, said, "Since last year, I've observed that students interest in sports are no longer limited to cricket. More students are learning football and lawn tennis as well as rifle shooting. The list of sports idols is changing every year."

Rohan Bhatt, principal of Children's Academy High School, Malad, said, "There is growing interest in football in my school, but I have decided to first make a good team for our national sport of hockey. There are others sports too like boxing and pool that students are interested in."
