Thane: Two persons, including a woman, have been booked for allegedly cheating an insurance firm to the tune of over Rs 28 lakh by submitting fake claim papers, police said in Thane on Wednesday.

According to a complaint lodged by the insurance company in Mumbai on Tuesday, the two persons cheated the firm to the tune of over Rs 28 lakh, Inspector Balasaheb Tambe of Kasarwadavali Police Station said.

One Beduprasanna Kumar of Narsipatnam in Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh, had filed death claim of Rs 20.34 lakh with company's Thane office on his father's demise, he said.

Kumar allegedly forged the documents to prove that his father had died, even though he was alive and the claim amount was cleared by the company, Tambe said.

In a similar case, a woman identified as Mita Sanatan Ravalkar from Ambernath area in Thane, submitted a fake claim of Rs 8.47 lakh with the same insurance firm, he said. She had filed the claim on her son's death and got fake death certificate from Ambernath in January this year. On basis of the forged document, the claim was cleared, the police Inspector said.

On the company's complaint, an FIR has been lodged against the two persons under Sections 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) rw 34 (common intention) of the IPC but no arrests have been made so far, Tambe added.
