Week before wedding, girl dies after being hit by train in Kandivli

Barely a week before her marriage, a 19-year-old girl lost her life after being hit by a Churchgate-bound fast train at Kandivli station’s platform number 4.

While the GRP thinks it is a case of accidental death, the girl’s family members allege she committed suicide because she was facing pressure and harassment from her fiance. They have been trying to register a complaint at various police stations, but to no avail.

Shrouded in mystery: Nisha Verma’s marriage was slated for May 2

Nisha Verma, a resident of Vakola, Santacruz East, was engaged to be married on May 2 to a Nalasopara-based man who works in a Vasai pharmaceutical company.

Nisha’s brother Pawan Verma said, “After her engagement as part of an arranged marriage, she was continuously in touch with the man and talked to him on the phone. On Wednesday, I got a call from the railway police that Nisha had met with an accident and they asked me to come immediately. I asked my relative to reach the hospital but she had died on the spot.”

“From the time of the incident, Nisha’s fiancé has not been answering our calls and has not spoken to any of our family members. He did not even come for the funeral. We suspect that there was something wrong between him and Nisha, which drove her to take the extreme step. It is a suicide and not an accident, the railway officials should check the CCTV footage,” said Pawan.

“Nisha was a very simple and happy girl. She had nothing to do with anyone and preferred just to be with family. She spent the whole day playing with kids and doing work in the household, She was a very sensitive girl,” said Nisha’s father, Jay.

A police officer from Borivli GRP said, “It is a case of accidental death. She was hit by a Churchgate fast train. We
are still investigating the family’s allegation.”
