Not only Mumbai, all the district police and commissionerates in Maharashtra have to depute policewomen as duty officers.

Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Prabhat Kumar has issued the order (Mid-Day has a copy) to all the district police units and commissionerates. The order also instructs not only women officers but also women staffers should be given important duties at the police stations.

A senior police officer said that the move is to celebrate International Women's Day and to encourage women police personnel in the department by giving them priority in handling important police duties at the police station level.

The officer further added that all police stations may not have a large number of female police personnel, but every senior inspector has to ensure that there are women police personnel at police stations are given priorities on Tuesday.
