Air India, in an official update on Saturday, stated that it has made an interim payment of Rs 25 lakh to the families of 147 of the 229 passengers who died in the Ahmedabad Plane Crash on June 12. The airline said it has also paid the interim amount to the kin of the 19 people on ground who lost their lives after the London Gatwick-bound plane crashed into a medical hostel, shortly after takeoff in the afternoon, outside the perimeters of Ahmedabad Airport.
These payments, intended to address immediate financial needs, will be adjusted against final compensation, the Tata Group-owned airline said.
Air India further informed that the requisite documents of an additional 52 victims have been verified, and their families will receive the interim compensation in the coming days.
To extend long-term support to the families, the Tata Group has established 'The AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust', dedicated in the memory of those who were killed in the Ahmedabad Plane Crash.
“The Trust has pledged an ex-gratia payment of Rs 1 crore for each of the deceased,” the statement said.
In addition to providing financial assistance to families, the trust will also fund the rebuilding of the BJ Medical College Hostel infrastructure, which was damaged in the mishap.
Recognising the vital role played by emergency personnel and volunteers, the airline said the trust will extend aid and psychological support to first responders, medical and disaster relief professionals, social workers, and government staff who assisted in the aftermath of the tragic incident.
“Air India stands in solidarity with the families and those affected by the AI171 accident. We continue to mourn their loss and remain fully committed to providing support during this difficult time,” the airline stated.
The AI171 crash remains one of the deadliest aviation disasters in the past decade.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
