In response to the nationwide general strike called by central trade unions, including the Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), the National Railway Trade Union (NRTMU) has announced it will organise peaceful solidarity programmes across Central Railway on July 9, 2025. The move follows directives issued by the All India Railwaymen’s Federation (AIRF) in its communication dated July 2, 2025.
NRTMU (Central and Konkan Railways) has directed its divisional and branch units to carry out demonstrations, gate meetings, and rallies in a disciplined and orderly manner. The union has assured that these activities will not disrupt railway operations and will be conducted in coordination with local administration, in line with the democratic principles of trade union expression.
The solidarity programmes coincide with a nationwide strike protesting what unions describe as anti-worker and anti-people policies introduced by the central government. All major national trade unions, barring the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), have endorsed the strike.
General Secretary of NRTMU (CR/KR) and Vice President of Hind Mazdoor Sabha, Venu Nair, called the protest a defining moment in India’s labour movement. He urged workers to demonstrate unity and resolve in defending their rights, institutions and voices.
Nair stated that the protest reflects deep resentment among workers against the new labour codes, the structure of the National Pension Scheme (NPS), privatisation of public assets and contractualisation of jobs. He highlighted demands for the withdrawal of the new labour laws, restoration of Old Pension Scheme benefits, creation of new government posts, halting the monetisation and privatisation of Indian Railways and other public sector units, and abolishing fixed-term and contractual employment practices.
The protest also includes a call for the immediate formation of the 8th Central Pay Commission, a review of public sector employment conditions, and increased protections for existing workers and new recruits.
NRTMU has emphasised that the solidarity programmes are aimed at raising awareness about the adverse impacts of current government policies on railway employees and public sector workers. The events will be peaceful and timed to ensure no disruption in the functioning of the railways.
The union has called on its field units to mobilise workers in large numbers, educate the public on the implications of recent labour reforms and use various platforms, including social media, to express solidarity with the nationwide strike.
Venu Nair concluded by urging union members to treat this as a crucial moment in their collective journey, to carry out the programmes with conviction and discipline, and to make their voices heard in the defence of worker rights across India.
