As many as 337 buildings in the city are in dilapidated condition, as per the list published by the BMC on Tuesday. Of these buildings, 70 are in the island city while 104 are in eastern suburbs and 163 are in western suburbs.

Every year before monsoon, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation releases a list of dangerous and unsafe buildings. The earlier list published in March stated that 331 buildings fell in the C1 category which means these buildings are beyond repair and need to be demolished immediately. The number has since increased by 6 and 224 of these buildings are still occupied.

“As a precautionary measure, citizens living in dangerous and high-risk buildings should move to safer places immediately,” said BMC Commissioner Iqbal
Singh Chahal.

However, in good news, the number of such dangerous buildings have reduced as compared to previous years. In 2021, 456 buildings were declared as dangerous and 165 of these were vacated and demolished. In 2020, the number stood at 499 and while it was 619 in 2019.
