Central Railway (CR) has recorded freight loading of 43.54 million tonnes in the current financial year (April–October 2025), supported by a strong uptick in container, petroleum product, clinker, onion, and iron ore consignments. For October alone, the zone achieved freight loading of 6.17 million tonnes.
Officials said that improved performance across key commodities enabled CR to post incremental gains over the corresponding period last year. Notably, onion loading rose by 110 per cent in April–October 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.
Freight loading highlights (April–October 2025)
Containers: 5,604 rakes (11 per cent increase from 5,032 rakes in Apr–Oct 2024)
Petroleum products: 1,476 rakes (5 per cent increase)
Iron ore: 434 rakes (58 per cent increase)
Clinker: 340 rakes (139 per cent increase)
Onion: 107 rakes (110 per cent increase)
De-oiled cakes: 103 rakes (13 per cent increase)
October 2025 freight performance
Container movement continued its upward trend with 813 rakes loaded in October 2025, compared with 748 rakes in October 2024. Onion loading saw a sharp rise—from just three rakes in October 2024 to 48 rakes in October 2025, marking a 1,500 per cent increase.
Other commodity figures for the month include
Petroleum products: 217 rakes (1 per cent increase)
Iron ore: 63 rakes (125 per cent increase)
Overall, CR handled a daily interchange of 348 trains in October, up from 340 trains per day during the same month last year—an increase of eight trains per day.
Officials said the growth in freight loading was driven by various business development initiatives, improved logistics solutions and efforts to enhance customer satisfaction.
Central Railway to run two special suburban trains for WNC Navy Half Marathon
Central Railway (CR) will operate two special suburban services in the early hours of November 23 to facilitate participants of the WNC Navy Half Marathon 2025.
According to CR, the specials will run on both the Main Line and Harbour Line, with halts at all stations.
Main Line: Kalyan–CSMT Special
The train will depart from Kalyan at 2.30 am and arrive at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) Mumbai at 4 am.
Harbour Line: Panvel–CSMT Special
The train will leave Panvel at 2.40 am and reach CSMT at 4 am.
CR said the services have been arranged to ensure smooth travel for runners heading to the marathon venue.
