Amid rising pollution, unchecked deforestation and the growing impact of climate change, a corporator has demanded the formation of a statutory committee to protect Mumbai’s environment and address mounting water concerns.
Ward No. 54 corporator Ankit Sunil Prabhu, in a letter dated February 17, 2026, to the Municipal Secretary and the Mayor of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, has sought the immediate constitution of a statutory committee comprising administrative officials, elected representatives and environmental experts.
In his proposal, Prabhu underlined the need for coordinated and integrated planning among various civic departments dealing with environmental issues. While acknowledging that multiple departments are working on related concerns, he pointed out a lack of inter-departmental coordination and strategic policy alignment.
He said a statutory panel would streamline efforts, ensure better coordination and facilitate long-term planning to maintain ecological balance within Mumbai’s jurisdiction.
Highlighting the city’s growing population and the resulting strain on resources, Prabhu also flagged the issue of worsening water scarcity. He stressed that instead of focusing solely on identifying new water sources, the civic body must improve management of existing supplies.
The corporator urged the administration to prioritise scientific treatment of sewage and wastewater and promote its reuse to conserve potable water.
“The administration should consider this proposal positively and take immediate steps to make Mumbai more liveable and pollution-free,” Prabhu said.
