In a major single-day spike recorded on Tuesday, Maharashtra saw 55,469 new COVID-19 cases. The city too recorded more than 10,000 cases. Meanwhile, sources said that the central government has formed teams, which would visit various districts in the state to monitor the current situation.

The city reported 10,040 new cases over the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) saw a huge spike with it recording 18,594 cases. The Thane Municipal Corporation, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombivli Corporation areas recorded 1,903, 1,319 and 1,365 cases respectively, in the MMR.
The state’s recovery rate now stands at 82.98 per cent with 34,256 patients discharged on Tuesday. The state has a total of 4,72,283 active cases. Meanwhile, a total of 2.09 crore laboratory samples have been collected till date since March last year, out of which 31.13 lakh have tested positive with a positivity rate of 14.88 per cent. Mumbai’s recovery rate too has dropped and stands at 81 per cent, while the doubling rate has dropped owing to increase in cases and is currently 38 days. Whereas, the city’s overall growth rate has increased over the past week and currently stands at 1.79 per cent. Total number of active cases in the city stands at 77,495.
In a sigh of relief, the mortality rate of the state is steady at around 1.81 per cent despite the increase in number of deaths. The number of deaths due to other causes in the state is 1,410. These deaths are of patients who initially tested positive but then turned negative and later died due to other complications.
According to the state government’s data, the highest number of deaths in the state was recorded in Mumbai, which saw 32 fatalities on Tuesday. The MMR recorded a total of 76 deaths, including those in Mumbai and the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation recorded 20 deaths. However, there was some discrepancy in the death figures released by the BMC and the state government. According to the civic body, Mumbai saw 31 deaths, of which 19 patients were suffering from other ailments and 20 were senior citizens.
