A day after the master plan of the ambitious Dharavi redevelopment project in Mumbai was given approval by the Maharashtra government, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde on Thursday said that Dharavi's redevelopment was the govt's social commitment.
Dharavi, once known as Asia’s largest slum, will soon become one of the most well-planned redeveloped locations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Shinde said.
Meanwhile, a review meeting on the Dharavi redevelopment project chaired by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was held at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai on May 28.
“This redevelopment is not just a dream, but a social promise. Dharavi will become a symbol of social justice and economic empowerment,” Eknath Shinde said after the meeting.
He assured that all departments involved are working together, and efforts are being made to overcome any hurdles.
The Rs 95,790 crore mega project is a public-private partnership with the state government holding a 20 per cent stake and the Adani Group holding 80 per cent.
The redevelopment is not just about housing, but aims to bring about a complete lifestyle transformation for Dharavi residents, Shinde said.
The state deputy CM further said, “This is not only about building infrastructure but about creating a model for employment, education, healthcare, and communal harmony. It’s a bold step towards a smarter Mumbai.”
Key Features of the Project:
- 253 hectares of total area, with 174 hectares available for redevelopment
- 72,000 units to be redeveloped: including 49,832 residential and 12,458 commercial/industrial units
- Facilities like schools, health centres, fire stations, police stations, libraries, and markets across 38,000 sq. metres
- Expected to benefit around 6 lakh residents
- Multi-modal transit hub planned with direct connection to Metro Line 11
- A “15-minute city” model, ensuring all basic amenities within walking distance
- Use of Digital Twin Technology and Tenant Management Systems for accuracy and transparency
- Survey completed for 79,455 houses using drones and LiDAR technology
- A committee led by a former Chief Justice will oversee the rehabilitation of 296 religious sites, with full consultation of Dharavi residents.
Shinde said that the aim is to develop a walkable, smart city that respects Dharavi’s diverse religious and cultural heritage.
The redevelopment will bring positive changes to the lifestyle of the people, making their lives better and more dignified, he said.
