Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakantdada Patil on Wednesday emphasised the need for concerted efforts to significantly improve the performance of Maharashtra’s universities in national and global rankings. He said universities must focus on enhancing academic quality, strengthening research, and expanding their global footprint to ensure the state’s higher education system becomes more competitive.

“We need to make greater efforts to improve NIRF rankings and bring the state’s universities to the forefront at the national and global levels,” Patil said during a review meeting held at Mantralaya.

The meeting, chaired by Minister Patil, was convened to assess the current status of university rankings and discuss steps required to boost Maharashtra’s standing in both national frameworks such as the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and international ranking systems. Officials also deliberated on the development of a state-level SIRF portal aimed at strengthening data management and performance monitoring.

Key areas requiring immediate attention were identified, including improving the quality of research across universities, increasing student enrollment, enhancing teaching standards, and upgrading academic and physical infrastructure. Patil stressed that producing high-quality research publications with international recognition and strengthening NAAC accreditation scores must be key priorities for all institutions.

During the discussions, officials noted that Maharashtra has the potential to significantly elevate its ranking profile with coordinated and sustained efforts. Patil directed universities to take urgent steps in all identified areas to ensure measurable progress in the upcoming ranking cycles.
