Lake levels in seven reservoirs supplying water to Mumbai surge to 73.88 per cent

As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, the total water stock in the seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai reached 1,069,357 million litres on Friday. This is 73.88 per cent of the total required stock for the season.

Mumbai’s seven key lakes: Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vihar, and Tulsi, collectively hold 10.69 lakh million litres (ML) of useful water content, translating to 73.88 per cent of their full live storage capacity. 


Among these, Modak Sagar has become the first reservoir to overflow, after reaching 100 per cent of its capacity. The Bhatsa has 4.6 lakh ML (64.21 per cent) water content, followed by the Middle Vaitarna with 1.79 lakh ML (92.87 per cent), and Upper Vaitarna with 1.68 lakh ML (74.02 per cent). The Upper Vaitarna has been releasing water since July 5.



The remaining lakes show lower percentages: Tansa at 79.13 per cent, Vehar at 48.36 per cent, and Tulsi at 49.79 per cent.

Notably, Middle Vaitarna saw a drop of 0.11 metres in the past 24 hours, while Bhatsa rose by 0.25 metres. 

The total rainfall recorded across all the catchment areas so far this season is 1,308.80 mm. No significant rain was reported in the past 24 hours at most lakes. 

Mumbai weather updates: City likely to receive light to moderate rainfall today

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, Mumbai is likely to experience a "generally cloudy sky with occasional light to moderate rainfall" across the city and suburbs. 

The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 32 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius, respectively, as per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

As per the tide forecast, a high tide of 4.31 metres is anticipated at 12.40 pm today, followed by a low tide of 1.89 metres at 6.46 pm.

Later, a high tide of 3.75 metres is expected at 12.27 am on Saturday, while a low tide of 0.59 metres at 6.15 am the same day. 

Residents, especially those in low-lying areas, are advised to remain cautious during the high-tide hours.
