In a significant move to strengthen Maharashtra’s fight against infectious diseases, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced the formation of a special task force aimed at controlling the spread of vector-borne illnesses such as malaria, dengue, and chikungunya. The initiative has received a strong response from Godrej Consumer Products, which has joined hands with the state’s Public Health Department and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to implement a comprehensive, science-based strategy across the state.
The task force, established under the direct guidance of CM Fadnavis, is designed to coordinate efforts across multiple agencies, ensuring an integrated approach to disease prevention and control. This initiative marks a major step toward Maharashtra’s long-term goal of eliminating infectious diseases and protecting public health.
A key component of this effort is the EMBED project, a collaborative program between Godrej Consumer Products and the Public Health Department. The project has recorded significant success, particularly in Gadchiroli district, where targeted interventions have substantially reduced the incidence of vector-borne illnesses. The program has also extended its impact to other districts, including Nashik, Satara, and Palghar, with focused efforts in both urban centers and tribal areas prone to epidemics.
Under the EMBED initiative, more than 400 medical officers, general practitioners, and pediatric specialists have undergone specialized training in modern diagnostic and treatment methods for malaria, dengue, and chikungunya. Additionally, 180 laboratory surveillance officers and 165 entomologists have been trained to strengthen disease monitoring and prevention strategies. Rapid inspection campaigns in high-risk areas have further enhanced the early detection and management of outbreaks.
Community engagement remains a cornerstone of the program. Through extensive awareness campaigns, home visits, and health and nutrition day initiatives, the Public Health Department and Godrej Consumer Products have reached over 100,000 households. In remote regions such as Gadchiroli, more than 52,000 individuals have directly benefited from these interventions, receiving timely information and support to prevent disease transmission.
The results of the EMBED project are already evident. Dengue-related fatalities across Maharashtra declined by 27% in 2024, while testing for the disease increased by 13%. Malaria testing has also been expanded, facilitating earlier diagnosis and treatment. Moving forward, the state anticipates further acceleration in rapid testing and immediate treatment protocols, reinforcing Maharashtra’s commitment to public health and disease prevention.
