What was meant to be a celebration of electoral victory turned into a violent clash in Nerul on Friday evening, as the internal friction within the Mahayuti alliance reached a flashpoint. Workers from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) allegedly stormed and vandalised the campaign office of a Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) candidate, following a heated confrontation during a victory procession.

The Nerul police have registered a First Information Report (FIR No. 0053/2026) against 18 identified individuals and several others. The accused have been booked under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), including Section 189 (unlawful assembly), 190 (guilty of offence in prosecution of common object), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 351(1) (criminal intimidation), along with Section 37 of the Maharashtra Police Act.

The incident occurred around 6:30 PM on January 16, 2026, at the Shiv Sena campaign office located at Sagar Darshan, Sector 18, Nerul (West). According to the complainant, Jeet Sanjay Mane, the office was being used for the campaign of Ashwini Vijay Mane, who contested the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections from Ward No. 23. As the victory procession for the winning BJP candidate, Rupali Kismat Bhagat, passed the Sena office, the atmosphere soured. The FIR states that BJP workers began chanting provocative slogans against the Shinde faction and used derogatory language directed at Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

How did the incident turned violent?

When Sena party workers questioned the slogan, the mob allegedly turned violent. The attackers reportedly used steel rods from flags and hand rings to assault those present. Mane alleged that Ganesh Bhagat struck him on the head with a metal ring, while Kismat Bhagat assaulted him with a steel rod. A driver, Rohit Pandey, was also thrashed when he tried to intervene. The mob didn’t stop at physical assault; they allegedly entered the office and smashed glass partitions, furniture, and CCTV cameras before fleeing the spot.

The police have named 18 individuals in the complaint, including Ganesh Bhagat, Kismat Bhagat, Ravi Bhagat, Ashok Gandal, Darshan Thakur, Shubhag Kakade, Ajay Navle, Babu Harne, Sagar Mohite, Pravin Patil, Surya Patra, Sudhir Bandare, Shubham More, Vikas Tikwane, Subhash Yadav, Darshan Bhagat, Sandesh Landa, and Rohit Chavan.

Assistant Police Inspector Sanjay Mohite is currently leading the investigation. While the police are scanning CCTV footage to identify more participants, the incident has cast a shadow over the alliance's victory in the region.
